What can I say, he is a bit of a ham these days! Posted by Hello

1 Year Check Up

Josh had his 1 year check up last week, here are the official results:

  • Weighs 21 lbs and 13 oz (he is about mid-range on the percentile rankings, which is normal for a breastfed baby at this point)
  • Height 30.5 inches
  • Is doing quite well for his age/gender with his vocabulary
  • Really hates getting shots in his arms instead of his legs (makes Mommy cry too)
  • Has LOTS of teeth for his age and many more ready to come in
  • His doctor loves him :)

I forgot to add a few words that he is using now:

  • Book
  • Graham Cracker - Yes I know it is a big word, but when you hear it you know exactly what he means!
  • Quack Quack - His one and only animal sound at this time and he uses it whenever he sees a duck!

We went to Kindermusik on Friday after missing the past two weeks and were so disappointed. There was a substitue teacher and she was nowhere near as good as our regular teacher. She has been teaching for 6 years, which I find really surprising because the class was a real dud! After this session is over with we are not going to sign up again. I think between the great free library storytimes and some other play sessions at the rec center we should be covered for his social interaction requirements! I can't wait for better weather because he is going to have a blast at the park and beach next year.

I'm 1, I'm 1, I'm 1..!!!!

Well.....my little guy has turned a whole 1 year old. Unbelievable. Along with his birthday seemed to come a bit of an attitude! It's like he woke up on the wrong side of the crib. His schedule is all wonky, so we have stayed pretty close to home this past week. We even missed both of his storytimes :(.

But the good news is that along with the 'tude is lots of fun advancements. He has a small vocabulary that helps us figure a few things out:

  • Dada, Dadeeee - This is his favorite and there is no doubt who he is talking about when he says it! He has a very funny way of saying it with conviction that he knows he will get Michael's attention. Like hey, pay attention, I'm talking to you!
  • Momma - This is rare but he can say it, he just chooses to torment me by saying it only on the odd occasion.
  • Sock - Loves socks, likes to chew on them. In fact give him a sock, he'll stick it in his mouth and crawl all over the house with it (his size sock of course!)
  • Shoe - Although he doesn't like to wear shoes (shuz) he loves the word. The funniest thing happened the other day, he was nursing and I looked down at him and he had this huge grin on his face (while nursing!). I started laughing and said what are you grinning about, he raised his leg up until his foot was near my face, he let go for a sec and said "shu". I cracked up laughing, because he knew exactly what he was talking about and you could see his little brain clicking away and he was just so darn proud of himself!
  • Cheese - More like sheez, one of his favorite foods.
  • Milk (nursing) - actually we use a hand signal for this one, when he starts opening and closing both of his hands at the same time, it is a very clear sign as to what he wants.
  • CookCook - Used for cracker/cookie type items. I had a box sitting on a shelf behind me and when he noticed them, he went crazy with saying cookcook. Now if I can just keep him thinking that graham crackers are the only cookies in the whole wide world, we'll be in good shape.
  • Bye Bye - Of course, he has had this one down for awhile. Works for both his going somewhere and someone leaving.

He is walking really well now, he prefers it over crawling. He has been on the walking kick for almost two weeks now. I finally had to go buy him some soft leather shoes so he could get a grip on the wood floors and quit slipping and falling! Of course, that didn't stop him from taking a dive on the carpet at the library yesterday and coming up with a huge bloody lip :(. I felt bad, he has fallen so many times and we just pick him up and brush him off, well, it wasn't too easy to do it this time with blood smeared across his face! He still has a fat lip today so we stayed home (!), actually we didn't just because of that, but you should have seen some of the looks that I got at the grocery store last night. Geesh people, I didn't do it, he tripped!

Josh got some good daddy time today, I taught class this morning, came home for about an hour to give Michael a break and then left again for 4 whole hours (!). I went into my old place of work to help out with a short project. Josh and Michael, hung out, played, had lunch, took a little walk and when I got home Josh was crashed out on the couch in the family room. It was so cute, he would have never let me put him down there to sleep, but it was okay if daddy did it. :)

A new place for Joshua...

Hopefully this will be the new place for Josh's journal. I am going to try and start copying the entries over from AOL, we'll see how it goes!

Who is that baby in the hook-on chair?.....

Okay...the title is supposed to be sung to "How much is that doggy in the window"...
So, do you recognize the big boy in the picture? Just taken yesterday, 10/23/04.

Good Grief!

Sorry everyone for the lack of updates here. My only excuse is that, that little guy you all love, keeps me going from morning till night and to be honest, at the end of the day my brain is usually just not up to putting my thoughts together and journaling. When he goes to bed, so does my brain!

It has been a very busy couple of months for Mr. Josh. (Again, I can't believe the last posting was 8/3!!). So let's see, he became a crawler right about the 8.5 month mark and once he started he hasn't stopped. He took plenty of head dives in his hasty attempts to make it across the room. When I took him in for his 9 month checkup, the first thing the doctor did was pull back his hair (nope, still no haircut, I have GOT to QUIT procrastinating!!) and looked at his forehead, she reassured me that about 90% of babies between 9 - 18 months come in with bruises on their foreheads (they actually did a study) and not to worry. Of course, he looked like he had been whacked a few times up the head, so I was relieved she wasn't looking at me like I was the culprit!

Josh has been a big fan of standing at the bottom of the stairs for the longest time, didn't really show any interest in going up them....until last week! I had put Michael's shoes on the 3rd step up, figuring Josh wouldn't think of going after them. I forget his fascination with shoes, socks, feet, and toes! Next thing we know, he had crawled up to the third step and was thrilled to have reached his goal! I went to teach class last Thursday, 10/14, and when I got home, Michael said he had crawled up the full flight of stairs. Yikes, he is on the move again. So now, of course, the stairs are his favorite thing and he makes a beeline for them whenever there is a clear shot to them.

We have set up the family room in the downstairs part of the house again. This is also Josh's playroom and so far it is working out pretty well. We have the room mostly babyproofed (he is always finding someway to hurt himself or sneak into a space we haven't noticed yet). Our coffee table is the classiest, in babyproofing attire. Michael put a foam tube that is used for insulating pipes around the edge of the table. That worked for about a week, until munchkin decided he liked to take bites out of it! So now it is covered in clear packing tape, which gives it a nice modern shine, in a decorative sense of the word!

This week, Josh has taken to standing by himself when you let go of him. He gets a big kick out of it, like he knows exactly what is happening and is pretty thrilled with the results himself. We've moved through most of the biting phase (for now) and he is learning not to bite other areas of our (mine in particular!) bodies. But beware, if you happen to have bare feet and your tootsies are just out there waving in the wind, he is known for taking a crawl by and taking a short stop off to take a bite at your big toe! You learn to keep your toes hidden.
We've been hanging out with his buddy Jaeden quite a bit, they get along well and J's mommy watches another little boy once in awhile so we go over so all three of them can play together. We also see J and Josh's litttle friend Matthew at Kindermusik each Friday. We started back a few weeks ago and it is definitely different with a crawler! He was 5 months when we started the first time and just shy of 10 months this time. The first class he was quite the class disruption. Now that he can move about the room he wants to see all the stuff that is off limits or hidden. He loves to go after the stereo equipment and whenever the teacher takes something out from under one of the covered tables and then puts it back, he watches with his eagle eyes and heads right for it when she is done. He doesn't like the idea of being able to play with some of the toys for just a few minutes and then having to put them away. There a few toys that I am going to get from Kindermusik because he just goes nuts over them. Of course, right now, his favorite "toy" is a spoon, just a plain old spoon from the silverware drawer. He is content to play and slobber on it for most of the day, he crawls with it in his hands wherever he goes.

We've picked up a couple of small trucks for him to play with, because he and daddy are good at playing vrooom, vrooommmmm, vrrrrooooommmmmm, with the trucks. Although I have to say his favorite game these days is "monster"....this usually involves mommy or dadding holding him while the other chases them around the house growling and yarrrring and making mildly scary noises. He laughs hysterically and tries to climb under your skin and soon as he is done, checks back over his shoulder waiting for the next scary monster noise so he can do it again. He has gotten good at giving it back to his and can growl and yawrrr with the best of them. The only problem is if you play it too much, then he thinks you are coming after him when you are just walking towards him and he gets all excited and starts running (okay, crawling) away.
I know there is more, but I thought I would just get something out there for you all to catch up on. I'll take a few minutes to get some recent pictures up so I can quit feeling so bad! :)

This was 3 months ago! What a change!

A breeze, a bit of salt in the air, taffy in my teeth.....

Okay, Josh didn't have taffy in his teeth (or should I say his tooth?), but he did get a chance to visit the ocean this past weekend. Auntie Mick's boyfriend, Cameron, was kind enough to offer us the use of his beach house in Ocean Shores for a girls get-away weekend. Josh, Nana Jackie, Auntie M and me of course, hopped in the car Friday night and made our way there by 11pm after stopping for dinner. We lounged most of the weekend, had a good breakfast at a local diner on Saturday morning/mid-afternoon, took naps, played cards until way too late on Saturday night. Sunday we finally made it to the beach and shops for a bit. After all of the nice weather we have been having, we actually had an almost completely overcast weekend. I guess the weather back in Puget Sound was still sunny and in the 80's. Oh well, it was actually nice to have it be a bit cooler for awhile.

Josh thoroughly enjoyed all of the attention he received from Nana (and he loved her even more for all the nummies she provided, let's see, there was toast......pizza crust......garlic bread crust.....about the only thing he didn't get were waffles, which was a big surprise!) You see, I had this mistaken idea that the three of us could eat 3 gigantic waffles apiece, so when I mixed up the batter, I used the whole dang box. Michele and I managed to eat 2 each (barely!) and mom only had 1, this meant 5 were left over, much to their amusement. Maybe if we had gotten Josh eating on them, they would have been all gone!

The only crazy thing about the weekend trip was that Josh's sleep schedule was totally upended, I'm not sure what upset him, but he wouldn't go to sleep at night and naptimes were not much fun. He was a crank all the way through Sunday night, not getting to sleep until after 1:30am and only after he feel asleep on daddy and we very carefully put him down. I concentrated on staying home the past two days and getting him back on schedule, thank heavens it has been successful and he seems to be back in the swing of things.

He has been eating a lot more lately, don't mess with the kid and his dinner! Breakfast he skips sometimes, but dinner, boy, you had better get it on the spoon and keep it coming fast! He has also been up on his hands and knees going to town rocking in one place, I'm sure he'll be crawling very soon. He inches forward a bit and then usually lunges forward to bonk his head on the ground and then starts crying, he'll figure it out sooner or later. He surprised me by pulling himself up to his knees in his co-sleeper the other day, fortunately, he was just in there playing while I worked in the room, but this means he won't be able to sleep in there anymore :(, oh well, more snuggle time with me!!

I think that is about it for now, I have a ton of pictures to upload, but we have been playing upgrade the computers around here and I don't quite have all the ducks in a row to get them online yet. Soon, I promise!

Nana and Poppa come to visit....

For Nana and Poppa's benefit, I am including all of the pictures from their visit on 6/12/04. Josh LOVES for N&P to visit, he is always in such a good mood. I don't know how they manage to always find him on his happiest days, but so far they have!
{{{{{{nana & papa}}}}}}}<--- Loves for N&P!
