A new place for Joshua...

Hopefully this will be the new place for Josh's journal. I am going to try and start copying the entries over from AOL, we'll see how it goes!

Who is that baby in the hook-on chair?.....

Okay...the title is supposed to be sung to "How much is that doggy in the window"...
So, do you recognize the big boy in the picture? Just taken yesterday, 10/23/04.

Good Grief!

Sorry everyone for the lack of updates here. My only excuse is that, that little guy you all love, keeps me going from morning till night and to be honest, at the end of the day my brain is usually just not up to putting my thoughts together and journaling. When he goes to bed, so does my brain!

It has been a very busy couple of months for Mr. Josh. (Again, I can't believe the last posting was 8/3!!). So let's see, he became a crawler right about the 8.5 month mark and once he started he hasn't stopped. He took plenty of head dives in his hasty attempts to make it across the room. When I took him in for his 9 month checkup, the first thing the doctor did was pull back his hair (nope, still no haircut, I have GOT to QUIT procrastinating!!) and looked at his forehead, she reassured me that about 90% of babies between 9 - 18 months come in with bruises on their foreheads (they actually did a study) and not to worry. Of course, he looked like he had been whacked a few times up the head, so I was relieved she wasn't looking at me like I was the culprit!

Josh has been a big fan of standing at the bottom of the stairs for the longest time, didn't really show any interest in going up them....until last week! I had put Michael's shoes on the 3rd step up, figuring Josh wouldn't think of going after them. I forget his fascination with shoes, socks, feet, and toes! Next thing we know, he had crawled up to the third step and was thrilled to have reached his goal! I went to teach class last Thursday, 10/14, and when I got home, Michael said he had crawled up the full flight of stairs. Yikes, he is on the move again. So now, of course, the stairs are his favorite thing and he makes a beeline for them whenever there is a clear shot to them.

We have set up the family room in the downstairs part of the house again. This is also Josh's playroom and so far it is working out pretty well. We have the room mostly babyproofed (he is always finding someway to hurt himself or sneak into a space we haven't noticed yet). Our coffee table is the classiest, in babyproofing attire. Michael put a foam tube that is used for insulating pipes around the edge of the table. That worked for about a week, until munchkin decided he liked to take bites out of it! So now it is covered in clear packing tape, which gives it a nice modern shine, in a decorative sense of the word!

This week, Josh has taken to standing by himself when you let go of him. He gets a big kick out of it, like he knows exactly what is happening and is pretty thrilled with the results himself. We've moved through most of the biting phase (for now) and he is learning not to bite other areas of our (mine in particular!) bodies. But beware, if you happen to have bare feet and your tootsies are just out there waving in the wind, he is known for taking a crawl by and taking a short stop off to take a bite at your big toe! You learn to keep your toes hidden.
We've been hanging out with his buddy Jaeden quite a bit, they get along well and J's mommy watches another little boy once in awhile so we go over so all three of them can play together. We also see J and Josh's litttle friend Matthew at Kindermusik each Friday. We started back a few weeks ago and it is definitely different with a crawler! He was 5 months when we started the first time and just shy of 10 months this time. The first class he was quite the class disruption. Now that he can move about the room he wants to see all the stuff that is off limits or hidden. He loves to go after the stereo equipment and whenever the teacher takes something out from under one of the covered tables and then puts it back, he watches with his eagle eyes and heads right for it when she is done. He doesn't like the idea of being able to play with some of the toys for just a few minutes and then having to put them away. There a few toys that I am going to get from Kindermusik because he just goes nuts over them. Of course, right now, his favorite "toy" is a spoon, just a plain old spoon from the silverware drawer. He is content to play and slobber on it for most of the day, he crawls with it in his hands wherever he goes.

We've picked up a couple of small trucks for him to play with, because he and daddy are good at playing vrooom, vrooommmmm, vrrrrooooommmmmm, with the trucks. Although I have to say his favorite game these days is "monster"....this usually involves mommy or dadding holding him while the other chases them around the house growling and yarrrring and making mildly scary noises. He laughs hysterically and tries to climb under your skin and soon as he is done, checks back over his shoulder waiting for the next scary monster noise so he can do it again. He has gotten good at giving it back to his and can growl and yawrrr with the best of them. The only problem is if you play it too much, then he thinks you are coming after him when you are just walking towards him and he gets all excited and starts running (okay, crawling) away.
I know there is more, but I thought I would just get something out there for you all to catch up on. I'll take a few minutes to get some recent pictures up so I can quit feeling so bad! :)

This was 3 months ago! What a change!

A breeze, a bit of salt in the air, taffy in my teeth.....

Okay, Josh didn't have taffy in his teeth (or should I say his tooth?), but he did get a chance to visit the ocean this past weekend. Auntie Mick's boyfriend, Cameron, was kind enough to offer us the use of his beach house in Ocean Shores for a girls get-away weekend. Josh, Nana Jackie, Auntie M and me of course, hopped in the car Friday night and made our way there by 11pm after stopping for dinner. We lounged most of the weekend, had a good breakfast at a local diner on Saturday morning/mid-afternoon, took naps, played cards until way too late on Saturday night. Sunday we finally made it to the beach and shops for a bit. After all of the nice weather we have been having, we actually had an almost completely overcast weekend. I guess the weather back in Puget Sound was still sunny and in the 80's. Oh well, it was actually nice to have it be a bit cooler for awhile.

Josh thoroughly enjoyed all of the attention he received from Nana (and he loved her even more for all the nummies she provided, let's see, there was toast......pizza crust......garlic bread crust.....about the only thing he didn't get were waffles, which was a big surprise!) You see, I had this mistaken idea that the three of us could eat 3 gigantic waffles apiece, so when I mixed up the batter, I used the whole dang box. Michele and I managed to eat 2 each (barely!) and mom only had 1, this meant 5 were left over, much to their amusement. Maybe if we had gotten Josh eating on them, they would have been all gone!

The only crazy thing about the weekend trip was that Josh's sleep schedule was totally upended, I'm not sure what upset him, but he wouldn't go to sleep at night and naptimes were not much fun. He was a crank all the way through Sunday night, not getting to sleep until after 1:30am and only after he feel asleep on daddy and we very carefully put him down. I concentrated on staying home the past two days and getting him back on schedule, thank heavens it has been successful and he seems to be back in the swing of things.

He has been eating a lot more lately, don't mess with the kid and his dinner! Breakfast he skips sometimes, but dinner, boy, you had better get it on the spoon and keep it coming fast! He has also been up on his hands and knees going to town rocking in one place, I'm sure he'll be crawling very soon. He inches forward a bit and then usually lunges forward to bonk his head on the ground and then starts crying, he'll figure it out sooner or later. He surprised me by pulling himself up to his knees in his co-sleeper the other day, fortunately, he was just in there playing while I worked in the room, but this means he won't be able to sleep in there anymore :(, oh well, more snuggle time with me!!

I think that is about it for now, I have a ton of pictures to upload, but we have been playing upgrade the computers around here and I don't quite have all the ducks in a row to get them online yet. Soon, I promise!

Nana and Poppa come to visit....

For Nana and Poppa's benefit, I am including all of the pictures from their visit on 6/12/04. Josh LOVES for N&P to visit, he is always in such a good mood. I don't know how they manage to always find him on his happiest days, but so far they have!
{{{{{{nana & papa}}}}}}}<--- Loves for N&P!

Houston.....we have a.....TOOTH!

See my tooth??? It came through on 7/9/04, one day after my 7 month b-day.
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Yep, he finally got his first tooth and he has been biting less since then. Surprisingly they don't seem to bother him too much, he hasn't been chewing on anything he can get his hands on. I think his sleep was a bit off for awhile, he thought 3:00am was playtime and just when I was about to get serious with him, he did a 180 and slept through the night the past 3 nights 8-9 hours each time. I am crossing ALL my fingers and toes hoping it will stick for awhile, I am enjoying the extra rest!

We have stayed pretty close to home lately, been outside doing yardwork mostly. We started our yoga class again on Thursdays so we get to see babies on a regular basis. Our friend Erika and her baby Jaden came back from a 3 week trip so we got together for a walk at Pine Lake park this week. Cute park on the lake, we'll go back for some toe dipping next week. We have beach weekends planned for the last two weekends of the month.

Solids are going well, he is finally looking forward to eating when I bring out the bowl and spoon. Have added peas to his list of foods and they are going like gangbusters. He is definitely starting to be interested in the food on my plate, I gave him rice off my plate at lunch today and for the first time he didn't make the gaggy face, he actually wanted more.

Rollin', Rollin', Rollin'.......

Josh has been a busy boy! As you can see by the title, he is "rollin'" in more ways than one. We now put a baricade of pillows at the end of the carpet in the living room otherwise, who knows where he will end up. He is quite adept at rolling both directions, whichever suits his purpose. He has been known to get stuck under the futon, though, so we usually have to put pillows under there too.

We have a fun new hobby (baby yoga class doesn't start again until next month and music class is off for the summer, so we needed a new "Get out of the house" card to play), we went rollerskating on Tuesday! Yep, every Monday and Tuesday the roller rink has "Stroller Fitness" for 2 hours. So you put munchkin in the stoller, strap on the skates, and get your cardio in! I met up with 3 other moms and babies from a online message board. Someone was kind enough to start rounding up all the local women and putting us together, so as we were chatting, someone suggested the skating idea. It was great fun to meet the other moms that I had been talking too and gave Josh a chance to meet more babies. Most of us hadn't been skating since we were teenagers, so it was a good laugh. The funniest thing was that even though it was a rink I had never been to before, it SMELLED just like the rink in Everett used too! And pretty much looked the same too. I guess that look/smell is universal! I can't remember all the songs, but let's just say we skated to YMCA and 99 Red Balloons, so you can get an idea of the music we heard. We definitely plan on going back again next week, you can work up a sweat doing it and the babies loved the speed!

Did I mention that Josh had a great 6-month check up? He weighs 19lbs and is 27.5 inches (which explains why all of his sleepers are suddenly stretched to the max!) He has put on 3 pounds and grown about 3 inches in the past 2 months! He is a bit skeptical about the whole solid food thing but here is what he has tried so far and his verdict:
  • Rice Cereal :)
  • Multi-grain Cereal :)
  • Bananas :( :( :(
  • Apple Sauce :) :) :)
  • Watermelon :)
  • French Fry :

I've stewed the prunes already today, so those are next on the list....he just doesn't know it yet!
Oh, the picture in the grass was taken in the backyard under one of the fruit trees, he was playing with Lexi (Auntie Mick's cat) and having a blast outside. The had fun until Lexi decided to spar with him a bit and he got scared although Lexi didn't really do anything to him. He still doesn't quite know what to make of her.

I can't think of much else that has been going on. We got a new porch swing (YAY!) that Michael and I put together last weekend. Josh and I have story time out there most days and it is always a nice spot to sit and nurse him in the evenings. He likes to hang out on the swing with daddy too, they watch the leaves on the trees and Lexi most of the time.

We are alive and well....finally!

What can I say! We have been busy/sick/busy/tired/busy! As you can tell, I saved several entries for pictures below.....I have so many to share! Lots of fun stuff has been happening and of course, I have had the camera out.

In the meantime, let me see if I can fill you in on what has been going on. We are just a few days away from Josh being 6 months old! Can you believe it? I am shocked that the time has gone by so quickly. He has made huge leaps in development in the past two weeks....even just in the past 5 days, I can't believe how much he has changed. He can sit pretty much on his own now, I started propping him up with his boppy last week and today, he hasn't taken a tumble yet, he's doing a great job maintaining his balance. Of course, he has the added incentive of being able to access his toys much better from the upright position.

He is grabbing for things quite well now! I now have to eat with everything far away from him if he is in my arms....I was trying to eat a hamburger at lunch today and he grabbed a hold of the wrapper and wouldn't let go....most of the lettuce came tumbling out across the table, I was stuck with a big glob of bacon (yes....I know....bacon cheeseburgers are not good for anyone!!) sticking out of my mouth, trying to get us all detached. Things are going to be messy from here on out I can tell!

He is definitely interested in food now.....I gave him his first rice cereal last Saturday (dutifully photographed and videotaped, stay tuned!), we had that 4 days in a row and he is getting excited about it now. We had to skip it today, because he is a little ahem....shall we say....backed up :) So we are going to take it easy. He has had a couple of teething biscuits (that was his very first food actually, the happiness on his face convinced me to not wait any longer for the cereal) and of course, they are beyond messy, but he is such a happy camper when he has them.
We are past it now but we both had bad colds...his first major cold and for me....one that is finally leaving me after 3 weeks. It was so pathetic though, the morning he woke up coughing and you could tell it was in his chest. He had all 3 adults (momma, dadda, auntie mick) all standing around just staring at him and going "awwwww" and wincing everytime he coughed. He is much better now and raring to go.

Let's see, what else has happened? We finished our last Mommy and Baby Yoga class....I was very sad....I would have definitely liked to continue but the teacher is taking the summer off. So instead, we are taking Kindermusik classes on Thursdays now. He is the only non-crawler/walker in the class (except one 12 week old) so he has to stay pretty close to me, but he loves all the dancing and singing and especially all the other babies. A friend had raved about what a great teacher Miss Allison was and she was right, she is wonderful about engaging the babies and they know when she is focusing on them and you can't stop them from grinning until their faces almost crack! We are going to join up with some other mommies and friends in the fall and take the class with other babies that Josh sees on a regular basis. Baby buddies, it's always good to have them.

I know there is a ton more but the brain isn't fully engaged right now....so I'll add on later.
(Update....I couldn't resist adding a picture or two.....)

Oh Momma...does all food taste as good as cookies?
